About Yurts

Yurts are the traditional tent homes of the nomadic peoples of central Asia and have a history stretching back thousands of years, particularly in Mongolian culture. In many ways, these time-tested shelters are one of the world’s first portable homes.

At its simplest, a yurt consists of roof rafters atop a circular, collapsible lattice wall, converging at a roof ring in the center - all covered by a fabric layer. The strength of a yurt comes from the synergy of its components: The weight of the roof pushes down against the flexible lattice wall, and tension bands around the wall push back, keeping the wall at a fixed diameter. This harmony of counterbalancing forces are what make yurts free-standing, strong shelters.

Our yurts combine the portability and strength of these ancient designs, with the durability of modern materials, for a spacious and unique camping structure or event space. Decades of research, design, and firsthand experience camping in yurts lead us to create a tent that is rugged, modular, and versatile, without losing the nomadic nature of the traditional yurt. Inhabiting a circular space is a novel experience and gives many people a peaceful sense, and the roomy interior offers inspiration for many uses, both aesthetic and practical. Efficient use of space, protection against the elements, and a "home away from home" feel make our yurts the perfect structure for everything from camping, guest accommodations, backyard adventures, event venues and more. Each is individually handcrafted in the US and we take pride in every yurt we produce.

Materials

16' yurt components fully collapsed

Wall, Rafters, & Door Frame - Our lattice wall, rafters, roof ring, and door frame use handpicked, sterling quality southern yellow pine, grown in the US, for a good blend of of flexibility and strength. All wood is pressure treated and finished for excellent weatherability, mold, and moisture resistance. We offer a broad variety of colors, or can even mix and match several. We can also work with several alternative woods from poplar, cherry, maple and more for custom yurt orders.

Lattice joinery - A three part assembly consisting of quality steel carriage bolts, hex nuts, and bolt covers holds the lattice wall in place. This allows for easy disassembly, should you wish to split your yurt wall into sections, paint it, or replace lattice. The bolts also serve as convenient hanging points for any number of items, and the hex nuts act as tensioners, allowing you to insert ropes or other ties in between the lattice pieces, and tighten down as needed.

Sunforger canvas and custom stitching are just one of our many yurt fabric options

Fabric - We use high quality Sunforger cotton canvas for the best in water repellency and mildew resistance. A staple in the camping tent industry - a proprietary treatment is applied to each thread before it’s even woven into canvas to ensure the most weatherable cotton canvas on the market - while still retaining cotton’s natural breathability. For long term applications, we also offer solution dyed polyester and rugged vinyl fabric in a variety of colors, or feel free to mix-and-match fabrics.
